THE PLIGHT OF THE BURMESE PEOPLE
As if the Burmese people hadn't enough to contend with by being brutally ruled by a Junta of military criminals, they now have to contend with one of the worst natural disasters ever to occur in the region. With a bit of luck this will spell the end of the general's rule as it appears that they don't have the resources to deal with the disaster. Hopefully, the world's aid agencies will get in there as quickly as possibe and do what they can to alleviate the suffering on the ground.

左の個体：暴れる獲物 地中に引きずり込んだ。大顎で咥え直すときによく逃げられるようですが、生き埋めにすれば簡単には逃げられません。蟻も昆虫界では穴掘り工事のスペシャリストですが無力化されてしまいます。化学兵器（強い蟻酸）を放出して対抗している筈ですけど、アリジゴクは平気なのかな※1。吸汁前に毒液を注入して獲物を麻痺させているそうです。右の個体：吸汁し終えた蟻の死骸を巣穴の外へ勢い良く放り投げた。おまけにアリジゴクは幼虫期に糞をしない（肛門が開通していない）ので巣穴はいつも清潔でサラサラ。皆さんも粋なペットとして蟻地獄を飼育してみては如何でしょう。水も不要で※2、飢餓にも強いです。お洒落にワイングラスで飼ってる人も居るようです。※追記1：アリは大顎で敵を噛んでからでないと蟻酸を放出しないが、アリジゴクはその隙を与えないらしい。実験的に蟻酸をアリジゴクの頭部に垂らすと獲物を離すとのこと。※追記2：この後残念ながら成虫に育つ前に飼育に失敗してしまったので種名は分からず仕舞い。普通のウスバカゲロウ（Hagenomyia micans）の幼虫の場合は 育が若干難しく、土（シルト）に適度な湿り気を与えないと干からびて死んでしまうらしい。（参考図書『砂の魔術師アリジゴク：進化する捕食行動』中公新書←おすすめです！）Antlion larva on the left dragged an ant into underground to subdue the resisting prey.
