People do spell it wrong, for the very reasons you've said. But people at airports etc, should know better and at least check spellings.

Concorde is British and French, a joint operation between the two countries. It was pretty much 50/50, although the French did a little bit more on the airframe and the British did a bit more on the engine. It doesn't matter about phonetics etc. It is officialy spelt Concorde. People who spell it Concord are wrong. Concorde is a noun and therefore should stay as it is.PS - I know all the above is true.

PPS I know the Concorde is a French made jet.. I was just pointing out we even change British English words.. And this to me shouldnt be but we do it Another way to pronounce Concorde (or how some might see it with the E would be, kon kor dee lol
orangie84 (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
Ps Im not saying you are wrong..I know the correct spelling is Concorde but many of us here are compelled to spell it Concord as this is how we would spell it with that pronunciation. Im not saying its correct but I had seen both spellings in airports and on the news..I have seen it spelled both ways.

True but in American English we change the spelling of a lot of words. We change British English words all the time as well as other languages..The reasons are endless but this is one to consider.. When you put an "E" at the end of a word the first vowel before it become a long sounding vowel.. as in cope.. This of course is pronounced k-oh-p drop the e and it is pronounced k-ah-p.. if we left the E in Concorde it would be nearly impossible to pronounce in English. kon-k-OH-rdt.. :)
