This isn't even vaguely new. "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin referenced the Lord of the Rings. Ritchie Blackmore has used these kinds of themes in Rainbow and Night. Black Sabbath goes a bit into fantasy with some of their stuff, so basically the three major bands that pretty much started hard rock/heavy metal used fantasy themes. Ronnie James Dio's first moderately successful band was even called Elf.
