Sorry for the shaky video; the original tape had severe interlacing problems, this is the best I could fix it.Hegel and MarxIn this program, contemporary philosopher Peter Singer discusses rational Hegelian philosophy, and the historicism and organicism at its root. Hegel's theories of absolute idealism and of a dialectic, emphasize history in their development of a model of reality. His concept of this reality as ultimately spiritual, and of philosophy as organic and constantly changing, is examined. The theories of Karl Marx are discussed as essentially Hegelian, but a practical economic spin.Section 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

i wish television shows of this calibre still existed. perhaps they do in england(?) North America for its part has abandoned this format.

First of all, I am an amateur philosopher, not a professional one, and I wouldn't like you to think that I have anything like your level of analytical sophistication. Secondly, with regard to science, I am not sure it can do so either. If it were possible it is well beyond science's capabilities now, but the route there would seem to lie via quantum mechanics and membrane theory (the updated version of Super String Theory. What I am saying is it wont be hocus-pocus; it will be physics.

I have no idea if science can do so, in fact. But anyway, I respect your point of view because it is important that philosophers make things clear before they claim. Or this is not a good place to discuss too much in detail.

He has a germ of an idea that he's trying to invent a language for. Try to understand the models of the process he's describing and then see the language as replicating that model. Spirit wants to return to itself through matter. It created matter so that spirit could realize itself in a new, "lower" way, awareness. "Lower" is in quotes because it's really higher. It's a kind of secularized religion.

ive been studyin philosphy for only 2 yrs so i cant really say which one i am, but probably more analytic. have you read his books? did you understand those unintelligible mazes of words he writes? dont you think he did that on purpose

Do you know the 0thouartthat0 channel? He has a recent video where he talks about unifying analytic and synthetic philosophy. Hegel epitomizes the synthetic type. Maybe you are more analytic. We need both to avoid enormous problems of how we deal with living in the world. To call Hegel a fool is to miss the gift of unification. There's no good reason to live in a meaningless world of chaos. It's time to heal. Hegel is a genius whose shoulders have supported many.

I will mull over what you have written and answer later. But I have concluded that everything that is thought of a metaphysical, i.e., spirit in nature, must either be material or they do not exist. In other words, one must either argue that science will in the end discover the dimensions of God and his angels, or one must be silent on the whole matter.
leophyter (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
When I firstly notice your 'mightily scientific form', I just supposed that somebody successfully build up metaphysics with logical system. Since none of the theories untill now can escape the transcendental argument, which is logically unstable, if somebody can work it out, it would be a breakthrough.
leophyter (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
Well in my point of view, quantum mechanics seems to be constructing a model of our universe. But there is no relation to 'being', 'essence' or something that metaphysics focus on. At least, it cannot work as a philosophy. I am like you. I also refer some philosophical topic to maths and science sometimes. But I don't think science can answer all question.
