I'd like to point you to Kanye West, a rapper who's style hasn't swayed much from album to album. And one who has actually evolved into a more conscience artist. His records sale more than Nelly's do and yet, he doesn't rap about someone "steppin' on his J's" or "his grill..his, his..his grill". I think there are plenty of examples that show that rappers can actually rap about something and still sale abundantly. My thought is that most of them are just too lazy to take the time to do so.
