I saw the end of this clip (poker game mime) on a vaudeville special on PBS about 5 years ago. Mr. Williams talent just jumps out at you - despite all the years. He's just wonderful and a joy to watch. Too bad there are not any more films of him out there.

It is such a shame there isn't more material from this legendary man. For an African American to rise to super-stardom in such an age is absolutely remarkable, and a testament to his enormous talent. He should be more remembered than he is, and I hope that someday history remembers his contributions.

Thank you for posting this! Bert Williams is a hero of mine (and I'm sure of millions of others!) Absolutely BRILLIANT!

I understand there is a fictionalized account of Mr. Williams life that was written under the title of "Dancing in the Dark".

A great talent who demanded respect through his great skill and art. It's a shame that we can never experience William's greatness on stage. Duke Ellington wrote a great tribute piece called "A Portrait of Bert Williams" in 1940, available on "Never No Lament; the Blanton-Webster Band" (RCA). Bert William's own recordings are currently available on CD. I suggest them for their historical significance and as a taste of his presence on stage.

Gene Buck, principal assistant to Florenz Ziegfeld, in a letter to a friend, said: "Next to Bert Williams, Bill [W. C. Fields] was the greatest comic that ever lived, in my book."--W.C.Fields-His Follies & Fortunes by Robert Lewis Taylor,(c)1967, page 8 |
