This music really does something to me. I don't feel rap or hip hop much. It just doesn't speak to me the way this music does. And Bessie Smith had such a tremendous voice... No one could EVER doubt a word that she sings. A person just knows it's from the heart and soul. It's raw and it's passionate. Powerful singing and music.

that's been proven to be untrue in recent years. Interesting how the lie keeps going though. it's been a rumor for a heck of long time.

I was enthralled from the first seconds of this. Then the Hollywood shit started and I couldn't bear it. So: two minutes or so of legendary film footage. I think Bessie Smith had the most lost potential of any figure in American popular music history.

yeah, tons of 'according to legend' things piss me off because they have a huge basis on the time period and rumors rather than fact...

Sep 26 1937 The Empress of the Blues, Bessie Smith, sustains grave injuries in a traffic accident on US Highway 61. She is taken to a colored hospital in Clarksdale, Mississippi and her arm amputated. Smith dies later that day from blood loss. According to legend, Bessie had been refused treatment by a closer, whites-only hospital. IF THAT DONT PISS YOU OFF!
