This is a myth! They could all Play to an extent. Peter and Mike had been working musicians who played guitar in a professional capacity before The Monkees, and Davy also played guitar before the show. I may be wrong, but I think Davy could also play drums.

Interesting posts but I think Fox Treatment got it right. the first 2 albums they had little to no say except for the tunes done by Nesmith and he made sure the other Monkees were involved with those. Kischner is fired and the monkees get more control of writing/producing and headquarters becomes the disc they play on from start to finish...by that time they had proven they could take it to the stage as a real live pop/rock band...not bad for the pre-fab four.
