"Drown" by Son Volt, from the album "Trace" ca. 1996. 11 years later, this album still kicks my ass. Son Volt 1.0. Still the best lineup.

Don't get me started on this song...it's the one that inspired me to learn to play the guitar. After 7 years, I still can't play it the same way Jay does. I still kick myself in the ass for not seeing them in 97' in NYC. Damn you Jim and Dave Boquist. Let's get it together. Reunite!

The first time I heard this in '96 I thought it was the singer from They Might Be Giants.I had to have this CD...best band along with My Bloody Valentine since Husker Du. The 3 most important bands since '78.

redbeakman,Once again, we agree.Any person who listens deeply enough to any music which causes his emotions to take notice, has a true heart.Take care.Rock

You sound like a good man! It pains me to see Jay looking so young in this video. I still remember the first time I listened to this CD like it was yesterday. It had a major impact on me.

redbeakman,LOL!! Sorry, I'll explain.Your words seem as though they came from "My," mouth.Yeah,Drown got all the airplay, but I agree, "Windfall," and maybe "Loose Strings," caught my, and some of my friends attention more, after buying the CD.Being a strong Neil Young fan, I wasn't surprised to read the comparison of the guitar chords of Son Volt, to his, in Rolling Stone. And the other bands you mention are all part of my collection. (Hence, the initial laugh.)Thanks for writing.

I can't stand pop country because it's vapid for the most part. Son Volt, Uncle Tuplo, the Jayhawks, Whiskeytown, et al, got back to reality and old time roots. By and large that was the appeal to fans of 'no depression'. 'Windfall' was the signature track of this album and one of the top 5 tracks of the 90's in my opinion. Even along side rock tracks like "Loose String" and "Route" "Drown" sticks out with a harder edge. Maybe it's just me.

redbeakman, I, "Came back," to hear this song, as the one that kept me playing the CD, until I got into the other rockers, "Loose String," and "Route."Others songs like, "Tear stained eye," and, "Out of the picture," gave the CD a "country," (which I also like) sound which may be the reason the CD was rated, #9 by Rolling Stone's 1996 critics poll, and #13 by the "Village Voice." I can understand the publics "confusion," about the genre of the CD, which caused low sales. No insult intended.

I think Son Volt was an evolution of Uncle Tupelo, whereas Wilco was something entirely different. I think the earlier Wilco was vastly superior to the last two albums, which are frankly boring as hell. Either way, I prefer Jay and SV.
