I think that the problem with the picture theory is that we get the meaning of a word not only by seeing or doing things, but also from all other sences. How can u represent a smell in a picture? If we on the other hand imagine a sort of duplicate world of where we represent the meaning of a word we could get a true picture of what that word means, subjectively ofcourse, but thats all there is for everything. Nothing is true, only true for one self except that which is true for everything...

Oh yes, I remember Fry's parody, especially the "Are we capppable?" questions. As a philosophy undergrad in Britian in the late 80s, I recall some faculty referring to Magee as Mr. Magoo. Evidently he's not too highly regarded by some in the philos community.

Yep, I seem to remember Hugh Laurie and Steven Fry doing an excellent parody of it on their show from that period. Sadly, the only place where programmes of this intellectual calibre are consistently shown on UK TV is BBC4, which only runs in the evenings.

Actually he wrote quite a bit about it in Culture and Value.

Today everyone knows that reality is not governed by logic, and in fact neither is language.

Skutari, your humor is rather dated. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore were doing that 30 years ago. See their Derek and Clive videos. |
