Having access to his memories? That's sort of what I thought. The way Deckard could list off Rachael's spider memory is the same - there are a few planted memories that remain untouched from the creator to the brain of the replicant. The unicorn dream is a specifically planted dream that Gaff is aware of, and so giving him the unicorn is 99% a way of saying "RUN!". So yeah, in that context the script end makes little sense...I'll have to check out the screenplay again lol...

I have a friend who loves reading (and writing) screenplays. I am verty interested in your ideas for what the end implied.I always thought that Gaff had access to Deckard's memories (hence the unicorn, Gaff left in his apartment...and Deckard having the dream of a unicorn) Thus leaving the idea that Deckard himself is a replicant and Gaff showing him that he knows and is 1) giving him a head start 2) letting him get out of dodge.

I was flipping through the screenplay last night - I like that end much better. I mean, of course there's the Deckard-and-Rachael-in-the-Countryside thing, but the script, at the very end, implies that Gaff is now in hot pursuit of Deckard. This would have made for a great sequel - seeing the world beyond LA, while Deckard is now the one running from the police.
