Let's face it a pop lyric that has to be explained by the grammarians is in trouble. He could have solved all this hoopla quite easily by changing the lyrics to 'answers' and 'dancers'.

He acknowledged that the lyrics arent grammatically correct, but he also commented that he is also allowed to do what he wants. The inspiration for the lyrics was from a Hunter S. Thompson quote - Were raising a generation of dancers.Stick that in your pipe and smoke it! Ha!

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers came out in an MTV interview to confirm his lyrics, which is in fact are you human, or are you dancer?. He wasnt too happy when some people thought it was denser instead. He was quoted as saying They think its nonsense. But I was aching over those lyrics for a very long time to get them right.

Not necessarily. A genus or concept doesn't need a definite article in English. It's unusual but not incorrect, e.g. he might have said 'Are we human or are we ape?' and that would be acceptable, even if 'apes' (or 'dancers') would be the more common usage.
