Horse racing oddity: jockey misjudges distance

http://www.horseracegame.comFo... some reason I find oddities like this May 16, 2004 race very entertaining. The Hasta la Vista Handicap at Turf Paradise in Arizona is run at what today is an unusually long distance of 1 7/8 miles. This requires two full circuits of the course, rather than the usual one time around in most races. Unfortunately for jockey Jorge Carreno, he forgets that minor detail, creating a very unusual sitation. On a personal note, in the early 1980s, I recall Hall of Fame jockey Jorge Velasquez falling victim to the same mental lapse in the 2 1/4 mile Display Handicap at Aqueduct. My father and I got a big kick out of the fans watching the replay cheering "come on Georgie" the first time around, as he was furiously whipping and driving despite having a mile left to run.

fyi:a woman in my town runs a horse rescue. the majority of her horses are off the track. most of them arrive with whip scars, one was so lame they had to sedate him to transport him. and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

ha i just love it when people watch a video with no real cruelty in it but still try to to find it and then once they are proven wrong they don't apologize... i also love how they have no clue what they're actually talking about but pretend that they are the most knowledgable and caring people *shakes head* Good job Dressagequeen22 =) You obviously know what YOU'RE talking about
prestonwasntmad (October 1, 2008 at 12:12 pm)

If horses don't want to run, they won't! And ppl won't waste time and or money on them if they don't wanna run

Sorry DeppisGorgeous but dressagequeen22 is completly correct. My auntie works with racehorses and my friends dad is a race horse trainer for a Sheik. Before you comment messages...get your facts right.
dressagequeen22 (September 23, 2008 at 7:46 pm)
firstly, that doesn't happen often. If they get injured they are retired and go to either a rescue or as a companionship horse. if they are just done with there career, we either breed them or give them to people we trust to use them for other disciplines...
DeppisGorgeous (September 23, 2008 at 4:55 am)
then i respect you for not making your horses do what they don't want to do; but what happens to your racehorses once they injure themselves and can't run anymore? do you keep them or sell them to a glue factory?
dressagequeen22 (September 22, 2008 at 5:22 am)
um...actually, I have racehorses, and an event horse. And I have worked with them for SEVERAL years. If they don't naturally want to run, we don't run them. If they don't want to jump, they do NOT do it. You are quite obviously the 'ignorant' one and i suggest you become knowledgable about something before you comment on it...of course there are accidents, as there are in every sport. However, these videos shown are a small...extremely small percentage of all races that occur...
DeppisGorgeous (September 22, 2008 at 3:02 am)
i'm sorry if you're ignorant. you should know, if you really are "dressagequeen", that horses can be forced to do things they don't want to do. horses are born to run, but not with people on their backs with whips. when i see you run a mile, at the fastest speed you can manage, i will concur.
