Many Irishmen fought on the Union side in the American Civil War. We kept it going. Some on the South side as well but not as many because most of the Irish immigrants went to Northern Cities. Paddy's Lamentation music video by me :D

Just a slight correction on the decription to the video: It was not that the Irish went to Northern cities and then moved down to the south, The City of Savannah, Georgia was actually the 2nd largest port of immigration in North America next to New York City. So the "Rebel Irish", and other immigrant groups (Germans, Swiss, Italians etc.) were more likely to have immigrated through Savannah.

Well done on the this piece. The Irish were a nation that was surpressed from so long that the only thing they could do when they left Ireland was to fight they knew no other way and they did . They to like the Brits have they faults and that to should be noted not just their side of pain and misery.

You can't blame everything on the Brits. In many cases during Irish history, the Irish were their own worst enemy. That being said, western civilization owes much to the Irish.

Similarly to the present hatred of Mexican immigrants in the United States. Irish immigrants were mostly unskilled workers who worked for low wages and were also different from the majority of Americans (as they were Catholic). They were looked on with suspicion and hatred because of this.

truth be told, most Irishmen who lived in the states before the war began fought for the Confederacy. and with good reason. They identified the South's fight against the North with their own struggle for independence from the British. The Irish who fought for the Union did so because they were promised safe haven from the potato famine, and as soon as they were given citizenship, they were conscripted. Honestly, their is no just side in the American Civil war. It all depends on what race you are

why so many people hate the irish, especially in the time of the civil war, like gangs of new york movie?
