FRED ASTAIRE in SMOOTH CRIMINALStarring Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Leslie CaronChoreographed by Michael Kidd'Smooth Criminal' by Michael JacksonVideo edited by CFJI love both Astaire and Michael Jackson. I want young people to know Astaire stuff, that is why I made this. The video features scenes from the Girl Hunt ballet in The Band Wagon (1953) starring Astaire and Cyd Charisse (those supreme legs!! The most perfect body a woman could have. So sensual, so elegant), to which MJ gave homage in his Smooth Criminal vid (also in a performance of Get Happy on the Jacksons show in the 70s as well as You Rock My World in 2001), and, as an intro, a sequence from Daddy Long Legs (1955) featuring Leslie Caron (in motion pictures, you mustn't put a coin into a jukebox in an ordinary way!).My initial idea was using also Yolanda And The Thief (1945) where Astaire appeared with the same costume, a white suit, hat and a blue shirt, but I eventually omitted it.Michael Kidd worked with Janet in the Alright vid in 1990, featuring Cyd Charisse (in the red dress!), the Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway. If you want to see Astaire at the top of his game, watch his 30s and early 40s films (Ginger Rogers was not the best DANCE partner for him though. She was a great comedienne. The pair was more than just dance partners). My other Astaire and MJ related videos:Origins of the Moonwalk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... Astaire + Robert Palmer - Let's Face The Music And Dance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... Side Story (Somebody Call Michael mix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

You talk about Ciara on your page. Who did Ciara copy? Maybe she Beyonce', Cris Brown, Neyo, Usher, and a host of others will tell you that good performers are inspired by other good performers. I have seen the exact footwork that James Brown made popular done in a clip during the 1930's. Is every move Chris Brown make a direct copy from Michael? Has every move Michael made copied Jackie Wilson? But have these persons been inspired? Absolutley!

It makes you wonder how far back the moves we see go. Seeing Chris Brown copy MJ, and MJ Fred Astaire. Maybe there are specific moves that haved been borrowed directly from one popular dancer and passed to the next for the past 1,000 years or more.

this video IS tribute to fred astaire....people just didn't know that because they didn't even know who fred astaire was, and when they finally realized where MJ got the idea from, they immediately say he's "stealing" the idea. What idiots. People will pick on MJ forever about something....just leave the man alone and accept the fact that he is a brilliant artist if nothing else.

i agree with ccinnervisions. MJ always credited Fred Astaire as one of his biggest inspirations. And it wasn't just Fred it was several other artists too....this doesnt make him a copy cat or a phony or any of the other bull you guys are saying. He took the ideas of parts that he enjoyed from other artists before him and MADE IT HIS OWN. All of MJs performances and choreography are still extremely original...look at Thriller, Billie Jean. Thats all MJ originial choreography.
