I work in professional video. You don't always have to use canned laughter or applause. Another option could be that they had separate mics on Walken and on the audience and merged the two later.

well of course you can see the audience... but the company that aired this most likely added laughter... otherwise the sound quality wouldn't be that good. it's an "unwritted rule" so to speak. in professional video.
