Dr. Orin Guidry, an anesthesiologist at MUSC and former President of both the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Board of Anesthesiology, discusses intraoperative awareness -- commonly known as awareness under anesthesia, the medical phenomenon that provides the basis of the recently released "Awake" movie starring Jessica Alba and Hayden Christenson. Dr. Guidry discusses the frequency of occurrences, gives an overview of what happens under intraoperative awareness and explains the various measures taken to decrease instances.Visit http://www.muschealth.com/insi... to learn more about awareness under anesthesia.

I woke up during a c-section where I was put under anesthesia about 28 yrs ago. It was so horribly painful. The doctor was vacuuming me out with a suction tube while sitting by my side. He noticed I was looking at him and he gave me more drugs and back to sleep I went. OUCH!!

I remember it. Not the pain, but the anesthetist making nasty personal jokes about me while she was standing right above me. When I confronted her she actually stated that she was right in her judgements and that she didnt care. Then she denied it officially.

Let me explain ,for general anaesthesia the anaesthetist will use combination of 3 drugs for operation.1) For sedation (Sleep)2) For movement (muscle relaxation or paralysed)3) For painif one of this drug not working or given to low, the patient will either feel pain or awake and can't move or awake , can't move but at least not feeling pain. so the anaesthetist need a monitor to measure level of sleep such as Danmeter Cerebral State Monitor (CSM).

42% of people feel it. Thats a lot.

I'm 41 and I've been put to sleep like a good 15 times in my life. I have never had this problem and pretty much everyone I know has had one procedure or another under general anesthesia and has never had this happen either. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it's very rare. General anesthesia has come a very long way in a relatively short period of time. Obviously, it's not perfect and not without risk, but I think a lot of people worry themselves into a fit about anesthesia.

I don't think you can feel it your just aware that its happening. Hence the name AWARENESS.
